Killzone – World’s First Screens News

Speculation over. We have the first shots & information on this PlayStation 2 game from Guerrilla…
There have been rumours about this game for months. Now they can be put to rest as SCEE officially announce âKillzoneâ:
âKillzone is set in the near future, in a period of planetary colonisation and revolves around a savage conflict between forces that are still loyal to Earth (the ISA) and a separatist, militaristic faction who call themselves the Helghast. The game follows a squad of four soldiers on a suicidal mission behind enemy lines, as they fight to undermine and defeat the Helghast forces following their devastating Blitzkrieg attack on the human colony.
Locations in the game will take their inspiration from a variety of 20th century battlefields; the trenches of the Somme, urban combat of Stalingrad, and the guerrilla warfare of Vietnam for instance.
The core of the game is said to be single player and focuses on working closely with your squad, perhaps with âSOCOMâ style voice commands, but gameplay specifics have not been revealed yet, so weâre still a little in the dark. There will be online play, and we would think this would be ripe for an involving co-operative mode, however details on the single and multi-player modes have not been revealed yet.
We have to say these screens were a bit of an anti-climax when we first laid eyes on them, expecting to be blown away with all the talk of the technical prowess of Guerrilla. Perhaps this is a result of our minds imagining all kinds of spectacular effects being crammed into a few screenshots. Setting ourselves up for a fall perhaps.
Spend a little time looking at these images and they seem a bit more impressive than a quick glance may lead you to believe. There is some nice subtle motion blurring, the foliage looks good, and the level of detail and design makes us think of 'Full Metal Jacket' and 'Starship Troopers', but without the bugs. Realism seems to be the goal here, not spectacular Hollywood sci-fi.
Imagine those troops sliding down from that drop-ship, with gunfire crackling over your head, the engines of the ship roaring while it bobs around as the troops descend from the dangling ropes that move realistically.
We would hope that the environment is along the lines of âHalf-Life 2â, in the sense of being consistent in itâs physics and having high interactivity and looking damn real. Guess weâll have to wait and seeâ¦
There is still a year to go on development, and it would be unfair to judge the game too much on these two screens that are probably purposefully designed to be not all that revealing. Guerrilla have plenty of time to add all kinds of fancy eye candy to ensure âKillzoneâ makes an more of an impact on release.
Developed in Amsterdam by Guerrilla, formally Lost Boys, âKillzoneâ will be released in the third quarter of 2004.
We will work on getting more information for you as soon as possible.
