Extensive first details on the latest chapter in the Jedi Knight saga...

Details shot around the net today regarding the unveiling of Jedi Knight III, amidst talk that this was somehow an elaborate āApril Fools Dayā ruse.

From what we can gather, German gaming magazine GameFront has apparently broken an embargo and included an exclusive first look at the title in the latest copy.

Although we wonāt show the images (you can find them easily enough) we decided to find out what we can about the game - only recently confirmed at an Activision financial conference.

Itās believed that development duties have fallen back to Raven Software, who are using the last iteration of the Quake3 engine to achieve some startling results.

However there are some big changes afoot for Star Wars fans; long-term hero and main protagonist Kyle Katarn has been given his marching orders, as players will now be able to create their very own character at the start of the game. Itās claimed that around five or six different races will make it into the final game, currently weāve seen Human and TwiāLek characters; players will also be able to choose their gender and dress the character in a range of clothing and accessories ā“ such as creating their very own customisable light-sabre!!! Itās currently unknown whether specific attributes and statistics will come into play, however we certainly hope to see some level of strategy to this feature.

Itās believed that Kyle has reunited with Luke Skywalker, and that the pair will serve as your mentors during the opening phases of the game. Itās believed that this game will be a lot less linear then previous games in the series; every key decision a player makes will affect his pull to either the light or dark side.

Itās been suggested that vehicles will feature heavily in the game, unfortunately we canāt confirm this at this stage, but after the success of Halo and Battlefield 1942 we wouldnāt be surprised to see them.

Raven Software have worked hard on ensuring that light-sabre battles are the best theyāve ever been in a Star Wars game; as weāve said players will have complete control over the type of light-sabre they wield, from different handle designs to double-ended light-sabres! Weāve heard that the control system allows you to effectively use both hands; prompting us to dream wildly at the possibilities of this claim.

Elsewhere itās believed the Jedi Forces will be enhanced way beyond the levels in Jedi Knight 2; it certainly appears that the types available to you are dependant on your stance with the force, whilst you should also have the ability to combine powers for greater effect.

Despite all the startling revelations, perhaps the biggest surprise is that the game is scheduled for release on the PC in Autumn 2003; because of the use of the Q3 engine, itās believed raven Software managed to progress with actual game content extremely quickly.

Weāll have a lot more on Jedi Knight III very soon; hopefully now the lid has been blown off, Activision wonāt take too long to officially release some screens.
