Jaffe Supports Single Standard News

Creative Director of God of War 2, David Jaffe, speaks out in support of a common gaming platform...

In a post on his Game Design blog, David Jaffe (the Director of the hugely successful God of War series) has positioned himself firmly in the single gaming standard camp. This follows the calls from EA's Gerhard Florin for an "open, standard platform" last October, to end the era of console wars.

Jaffe, who left Sony last July to start his own company (Eat, Sleep, Play), said that a single gaming platform could only be good for gamers as it would increase the competition between developers and publishers to produce good quality products:

"You get more competition on the software side - which is, to me, where it counts - because there is more competition to be the best on a single system."

He also provided a possible solution to the predicament faced by the games industry, and likened it to a Mafia family gathering:

"I think the leaders of the biggest groups should come together from time to time - like the big Mafia families do in the movies - and make some decisions together for the overall health of the business. Heck, maybe they already do this and I am just not aware. But if they do, they have not made the right decision on the one thing I think that could benefit gamers and game makers in a massive way: a single console."

Seemingly aware of the problems with business monopolies, Jaffe commented that while one game publisher or developer to rule them all was a bad idea, a single gaming platform certainly wasn't:

"One game publisher would be bad. One giant game developer would be bad. I get how those things would hurt gamers. But why would one unified hardware platform?"

"We have it with DVD, we had it with VHS. We have it with televisions," he continued. "So what do we lose by having it for game consoles?"

the comments feature is either messed up or an odd design choice, all these articles seem to share the same thread.

I know I'm a bit late to this party, but you're wrong, "mrawesome" (can anyone be more generic?). The 360 isn't doing well in Japan and most of Asia, and the PS3 is closing in on the 360 in Europe. I'm not saying that sales = better console... [ Read full comment... ]
