Itagaki: Ninja Gaiden 2 Is My Final Instalment News

Speaking to TVG at Microsoft's Spring Showcase, the creator of Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive reveals a new chapter in his gaming life...
Due for release in the UK on June 6th, Team Ninja's Tomonobu Itagaki has today revealed to TVG that Ninja Gaiden II will be the final instalment in the fast-paced action franchise he'll be in control of. Staying positive with his decision, the Team Ninja team leader spoke about how Ninja Gaiden II marked the start of a new chapter in his gaming career, and that development of the game felt like it was his first:
"I'm really proud of how it's turned out. I think is this is the best and most fun game I've ever done. I almost feel like I've been born again, like this is the first game I've ever made."
Itagaki also confirmed that Ninja Gaiden II would be much more accessible then previous instalments, and is set to appeal to a broader audience. When asked by TVG whether he was frustrated that this more accessible edition wouldn't get the broad audience in Japan due to the Xbox 360's performance in the country, Itagaki made a somewhat bizarre defence of the console, blaming a change of economy and a declining birth rate:
"There's nothing that can be done about that. It's things like economic policy, the fact that the size of the population of children in Japan is dwindling or moving away from console gaming. It's a lot of factors involved, rather than that the Xbox 360 doesn't do well because it's Xbox; there are a whole number of social factors involved...It all goes back to the decisions made by the [Japanese] politicians sixty years ago."
The out-spoken developer also revealed his displeasure over 2007's PlayStation 3 revamp of the original instalment, Ninja Gaiden Sigma. Discussing the title, a visually polished port of the Xbox original, Itagaki-san said, "It was a weird chimera of a game, with some things here and some things there. From a game design standpoint, I don't think it was done well at all. This [Ninja Gaiden II] is the definitive version of Ninja Gaiden...I look at NG2 and I think it's the culmination of everything I've done, but it's also a chance for me to change how I think about game design."
In other words, it's a safe bet to conclude that a Sigma edition of Ninja Gaiden II isn't on the cards for PS3 anytime...well, ever.
