Infogrames enter the popular Tennis mark but can it rival Sega’s and Namco’s mighty efforts.
Infogrames today announced Slam Tennis, due for release in July on both Xbox and Playstation2. Slam Tennis allows you to play as a number of real-life professionals, including the likes of Tim Henman, Carlos Moya and Yevgeny Kafelnikov, or create your own player to compete in the different game modes on offer.
A standard Arcade Mode allows you to play through a series of increasingly difficult matches against a number of different opponents. The Exhibition Mode allows 1-4 players to take part in a friendly or tournament, in which you can set all the options (stages, players, rules). The main bulk of the game lies in the Championship Mode, which sees you competing against some of the greatest players in the modern game, in events across the world, with the aim of winning the Slam Tennis Championship. There is also the opportunity of unlocking a variety of rewards including bonus kits, hidden players and new stadiums. As with Segaâs Virtua Tennis series, relief from the game is provided with a number of mini-games such as Sand, Sea and Destroy, which sees you using your serve to pop as many beach balls as possible.
Modelled after Virtua Tennis, Infogrames are promising pick-up-and-play controls, that hide a substantial amount of depth, letâs hope it can rival rather then be a mere imitation of Segaâs classic.
The screens are from the Xbox version, hopefully weâll have some PS2 screens shortly.
