New software solution set to help next-gen game developers...
Renowned for their middleware products, which has gone on to power a large number of high profile games including Halo 2, Mercenaries, and the forthcoming Xbox 360 title Perfect Dark Zero, Havok has today announced a new software technology that is set to help developers undertake game creation in the multi-threaded, multi-core environment.
Called âHydraCoreâ, the technology essentially breaks down various tasks and distributes them through the multi-core, multi-threaded processors such as those used in Xbox 360, PlayStation3, and AMDâs 64-bit processor family with additional hardware. In practical terms this will mean that game developers will be able to assign various threads to manage a range of computation-heavy tasks that are set to feature in next-generation gaming.
âThe face of gaming will change significantly in the next two years, as the computational power available to PC and video game players takes another huge step forward,â said Jeff Yates, Vice President of Product Management for Havok. âNext generation game systems will offer built-in scalability in the form of multi-core and multi-processor hardware that will be standard in consumer game systems shipping in the next 12 months. Havokâs HydraCore⢠software technology is designed to help game developers tap into the true power of these systems, by distributing real-time computation of physics and character animations flexibly and evenly across multiple processors.â
âDevelopers are only now beginning to scratch the surface of the computing power available from our cutting edge AMD Athlon 64 FX processors,â said, Bob Brewer, Corporate Vice President, AMD Desktop Business Division, Microprocessor Business Unit, Microprocessor Solutions Sector (MSS) Business. âAMD is committed to the PC game industry and supports the groundbreaking strides made by Havok in bringing multi-threaded capabilities to the next generation of PC games.â
