With another wave of negativity washing over the PlayStation3's impending launch, Sony sets the record straight...
Remember when Sony announced that only a limited number of PlayStation2 titles would be backwards compatible on European PlayStation3s? What sort of figure did you have in mind? 100, 200, 300 titles? Well, after days of watching yet another wave of negativity rush towards the company, SCE Worldwide Studios boss Phil Harrison has revealed that the figure will be closer to the much more impressive 1000 titles.
Speaking to semi-official blog Three Speech, Harrison explained:
"Our thinking involves being able to bring the latest hardware specification of the PS3 to Europe, although that does mean an initial slight reduction in the number of PS2 components. But it's important to put that into context: there will still be thousands of PlayStation and PlayStation 2 titles playable on the PS3 at launch. It's very easy to over-react. We're working to introduce a resource on the Web to detail which titles will have backwards compatibility. And as we make firmware upgrades, we will be able to add to that list...on March 23, we expect the list to include over 1,000 PS2 titles."
The issue over the PlayStation3's backwards compatibility in Europe is something of a PR disaster for Sony. Instead of revealing that there'd be a "limited" number of titles compatible with the system, why didn't they take the line that despite the lack of the Emotion Engine, there'd still be at least 1000 games - which is about three times the amount of Xbox games backwards compatible with Xbox 360...
