Harmonix at work on something "bigger and more ambitious" then Guitar Hero...
Inspired from the pages of rock 'n' roll history, the split between Harmonix and Red Octane (or more specifically the acrimonious power struggle between Activision and MTV surrounding Guitar Hero) today officially became reality as the game's developer commented on the situation.
Murmurings of the future of Guitar Hero began last year with the Activision acquisition of the franchise and the game's publisher Red Octane, followed later in the year by MTV snapping up the game's developer, Harmonix.
Presumably with vested interests (particularly the links between MTV Networks and Midway), the two parties have decided it better to part ways, which was again hinted at earlier in the year with staff vacancies underway at Neversoft for the obligatory Guitar Hero 3.
Speaking to Gamasutra about the split, Harmonix' Daniel Sussman has recently suggested that his team are currently working on something "bigger and more ambitious" then was possible with the Guitar Hero franchise.
Taking a cursorily glance at the trademarks registered recently by Harmonix as a suggestion of what they could be thinking, "Rock Gods", "Drum Hero", "Battle of the Bands", "Gods of Rock"... We'll let you speculate on this one for now, but it's pretty safe to assume where Harmonix are heading.
