Microsoft allows developers to create MMO titles that require the use of a HDD...
Reporting from Microsoft's Gamefest event, MCV today revealed that developers and publishers have been given the nod to create Xbox 360 titles that require the use of the Hard Disk Drive.
Previously Microsoft's guidelines had ensured that all Xbox 360 games would work regardless of whether a HDD was featured or not, the sole exception stemming from SEGA and Sports Interactive's Football Manager 2006.
It's believed the decision is restricted to developers working solely on MMO titles, with MCV suggesting that they will now be allowed to store a single 'Master Storage File' on gamer's HDD without any limits on the disk space needed.
Presumably, the decision marks a continued change for Microsoft and the Xbox 360, which along with the release of the Elite unit suggests that the HDD is becoming increasingly important to the format's overall strategy and the Core could have been a mistake - though you'll probably never find Microsoft admitting that.
Whether or not today's decision will extend the appeal to MMO developers and counter Sony's exclusive tie-in with NCsoft remains to be seen; the ultimate question obviously still remains as to whether anybody can tempt Blizzard onto the consoles.
