Sony announce that the sale of UMD based movies breaks through its first marker without the help of Spiderman 2...
Global news organisation Reuters have reported that global sales of UMD based movies have broken through the 100,000. The proprietary format, which is used by Sonyâs PSP handheld console, has been attracting a wide selection of titles across a range of film companies including Paramount Pictures and 20th Century Fox. The figure does not include the number of units of the Spiderman 2 UMD, which came bundled with early sales of the system.
The news comes as one European Sony executive announced the number of UMD movies available for the European launch of the system on September 1st 2005. Speaking earlier this week, Patrick Vyncke, PlayStation Chief for the Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg) countries, "Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will have 10 films available from day one,â although that figure is set to increase to twenty titles by the middle of September 2005. The system is also expected to have over fifty game titles ready for Christmas 2005 from Sony and third-party publishers alike.
At the moment a price for the UMD movies is unknown, but retailers in North America have been selling the films for between $19 and $29 (£10.44 and £15.95 respectively.) So far the movies released have been held with Sonyâs core demographic but future releases will expand into other genres that appeal to a wider audience.
Weâll have more shortly...
