Microsoft confirms an XNA Challenge to independent developers and adds new features to the homebrew platform...
Continuing its conquest to open up Xbox 360 development for independent developers and hobbyists alike, Microsoft kicked off the "Dream-Build-Play" campaign at this year's Games Developer Conference.
Offering a $10,000 grand prize and the opportunity for the winning entry to feature on Xbox Live Arcade (make sure you check the royalty fine print), additional prizes will also be on offer from Microsoft, Alienware, AMD, Autodesk and SoftImage. The contest will end on July 2nd with winners announced at Microsoft's Gamefest 2007 in Seattle on August 13th.
To push the service even further, Microsoft will host the "XNA Game Studio Express Challenge" during GDC, which will see game developers attempt to create four different games in four days using the platform. Offering a sign of what developers can create using the platform, Microsoft also lifted the wraps on Schizoid, a game developed using XNA Game Studio Express and currently underway at Torpex Games. The fast-paced co-op action title is set for release towards the end of the year.
Finally, Microsoft confirmed that the XNA Studio Express platform would expand with additional software tools including a license for members of the XNA Creators Club for Garage Games Torque X Engine; support from SoftImage XSI-3D software; and a free MapZone 2D texture editor from Allegorithmic ProFX.
