Sony representatives talk about the common tools used to harness the power of the CELL processor...


Sony today allayed fears that developing for the Playstation3 will be a complicated experience, with a demonstration at the Game Developers Conference focussing around the fact that existing tools and technology will be incorporated along with new features that should allow developers to work smarter.

As we previously reported almost eight months ago, the CELL processor will rely on a variation of the of the standard OpenGL library, with plans between Sony and the Khronos Group to develop Open GL/ES, an extension specifically designed for interactive content.

High-level visual effects will be mastered through the use of Cg, a high-level language created by nVidia for graphics programming; while programmers can take control of the eight âsynergistic processing elementsâ via standard C/C++ tools, a marked improvement upon the assembly-language demands of the Playstation2.

The speech introduced Collada, described as an extension of XML and serving as standard format for describing game assets, allowing developers to reuse content across multiple titles.

this a good thing over 9 yrs it will happen folk wiil soon tire of wii's and the xbox(which is nearly all shooters, fun 4 a while, but ps3 does more in all ways

lol just how does sony expect the ps3 to sell more than the ps2 is a bit dumb considering the ps2 is still selling bucket loads across the world and with 120 more titles expected to hit the ps2 this year is it a real objective to shift over 140 milli... [ Read full comment... ]

not true. mine jumped 50 to 100 and i have had no problems since the update. i just hope that theres patches coming out for trophies soon...
