The man behind Elite announces his new next-gen thriller and a golden age of gaming...

David Braben, the man behind the iconic Elite, has today announced the development of the next-gen title for his studio Frontier. āThe Outsiderā is set in modern day Washington DC and the surrounding areas such as CIA HQ at Langley, and follows the story of a CIA operative as heās made Public Enemy Number One to both the media and the public at large after an event undisclosed by Frontier. Using new technologies developed at Frontier, the game will able players to progress through the game without the use of traditional techniques of linear story lines, instead the story will unfold according to character motivations and aim ā“ something that Frontier expects will create a more sophisticated, visceral experience more complex than the usual good and bad character routes.

David Braben, Chairman and Founder of Frontier said "The new games consoles like Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 offer a massive opportunity in the future of gaming. One of the comparisons I like to make is with the film industry ā“ we're at the stage that the film industry was at in 1930, where people had started to tire of effects driven 'car-on-a-train-track' films and wanted something more, just as technology and budgets greatly increased to bring in the golden age of Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Wells and many others. A golden age of games is now just around the corner, and I believe 'The Outsider' is one of the first of these."

If anybody can bring about this premise of more fluid story pregression based on the decisions of the player, then David Braben and his team are certainly the ones to do it. Weāll have more news on The Outsider in the futureā¦
