Capcom find themselves in hot water over the similarities between Dead Rising and Dawn of the Dead...
Perhaps the reason why we've yet to see the rerun of Frank West in Dead Rising 2 lies with a potential lawsuit hanging over Capcom's head.
According to Kotaku, The MKR Group who owns the copyright and trademark behind George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead series, is seeking compensation for what it claims is a breach of copyright.
Apparently it was at the bequest of The MKR Group that the original Dead Rising featured the "This game was not developed, approved or licensed by the owners or creators of George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead" disclaimer, however, it seems that's not enough with letters sent out to Capcom, Microsoft, and Best Buy alleging that the game is on shaky legal ground.
Of course, the similarities between Dead Rising and Dawn of the Dead lie squarely with the shopping mall setting, and it seems Capcom are confident that there's nothing much to concern themselves over (even going so far as making up words), commenting, "humans battling zombies in a shopping mall is a wholly unprotectible idea."
Whilst this will undoubtedly develop further, TVG can't help but feel it's all a little pointless; what next Jerry Bruckheimer suing NAMCO because Ace Combat has planes in?
