Forza Put Through Its Paces News

US publication compares the forthcoming Xbox driving sim to real life on the open road...

News has filtered through to us today that US publication, Popular Science, has put Microsoftâs forthcoming driving sim Forza Motorsport through its paces by comparing the performance of two drivers in the game and then comparing those times to their results on the real world track.

Racing around the American LeMans track Road Atlanta the drivers, American LeMans Series racer Gunnar Jeanette and veteran racing gamer RJ DeVera, drove six of the cars available in Forza around the virtual track followed by a spin around the real track in the same six cars. Popular Science gave the two guinea pigs an envious amount of equipment to play Forza including a FANATEC Speedster ForceShock steering wheel, a VRX SPARCO Pro2000 racing seat andâ¦a 50-inch plasma screen TV (nice.)

âThe drivers werenât really racing against one another,â said Eric Adams, Aviation and Automotive Editor, Popular Science. âThe most scientific way of testing Forza Motorsportâs realism was to look at how the drivers performed against themselves â“ in real life and on Xbox.â

âForza Motorsport is an incredible driving simulation that weâve been working on for more than three years and are extremely proud of,â said Dan Greenawalt, Lead Designer, Forza Motorsport. âWhen Popular Science â“ a publication that prides itself on technology and innovation â“ came to us with the idea to put the physics and realism of Forza to the test, we jumped at the opportunity.â

âHead-to-head, the performances were very similar, with lap times in the game consistently a handful of seconds faster than those recorded on the track,â said Adams. âI think thatâs mainly because in the simulator, the drivers started out at a maximum and took the no-fear approach. That is, if they took a corner too sharp and hit a wall, they knew they could always start the race over without any consequence. The fear of real-life impact at 150mph is probably what prevented Gunnar and RJ from taking that same approach on the track, and ultimately what prevented them from reaching the benchmarks they set in Forza.â

Forza Motorsport is set for release on May 3rd 2005, weâll have our preview of the game shortly...
