Forecasters Knock Xbox 360 Expectations News

A year after predicting a worse-case scenario for Sony, DFC Intelligence reports that Xbox 360 needs to push to avoid coming third...
Gazing through the mists of time, market analysts at DFC Intelligence in the US have today revealed news expectations that the videogames market could top $47 billion by 2009 - with PC gaming potentially hitting $13 billion by 2012.
The group has also re-evaluated its expectations for the three separate consoles, updating its various scenarios laid out twelve months ago. Back in 2006, DFC reported that in a worst-case scenario PlayStation 3 could end up in third place - how things have changed. This time, the analysts are predicting that unless Microsoft and Xbox 360 pick up the slack, the biconcave console could be the one to fall behind.
"The Xbox 360 will need to build a strong base outside North America to avoid being in a fairly distant third...We could have a situation where the Wii sells more hardware units, but by 2012 the PlayStation 3 is generating more software revenue," says DFC Intelligence's David Cole.
Beyond new expectations of an impending tussle between PS3 and Wii, Cole also had some good news for Nintendo's portable system: "Revenue from portable game software has more than doubled in recent years and we think that the Nintendo DS could eventually become the best selling game system ever in five years."
