Scarily atmospheric visuals and a truly intriguing storyline provide the main drive behind Monolith’s latest shooter…
F.E.A.R certainly proved to be one of the yearâs highlights at a recent Vivendi-Universal event that we attended, despite the fact that it comes on top of âThe Year of the FPSâ. Most surprisingly is the fact that the game throws up one or two concepts that change the experience quite significantly in a genre needing innovation; particularly itâs melee combat and slow-mo features create an experience similar to The Chronicles of Riddick but largely unlike any other.
So you can imagine the disappointment - having sampled the first mission of the single-player and having fun with the multiplayer - when Monolith refused to answer anything even bordering on inquisitive at the following interviewsâ¦
It is entirely understandable, given that one of the major hooks to F.E.A.R is the compelling storyline that lurks beneath the technology and exhilaration. Taking obvious influence from Japanese horror flicks such as The Ring, exactly how a young child obliterates a Special-Ops squad remains one of the biggest questions of 2005, partially because of its stylish execution and largely because Monolith refuse to elaborate any further.
So the news of a new trailer caused a great deal of pant-swapping action (for Jon) when it filtered through earlier today⦠although itâs teaser-like nature fails to shed any light on the subject.
Relying on admittedly impressive editing skills and striking visuals, Monolith show no sign of revealing anything further about the âhookâ before the gameâs release during Q2 2005.
