SCEE Executive VP confirms v2.00 as standard for European PSPs during GDCE keynote...
With less than twelve hours to go until the PSP lands on European shores, SCEE Executive Vice President Phil Harrison has announced during his keynote speech at the Game Developers Conference Europe that European PSPs will come with version 2.00 firmware as standard. Featuring most notably a web browser (remember to check out TVG on PSP at totalvideogames.com/psp from your PSP), the firmware includes several updates that are rounded up in our look at v2.00.
The addition of the firmware upgrade was one of the silver linings of the PSPâs delayed debut in Europe, together with a larger launch line-up of games, although Mr Harrison said that the delay was âobviously not optimal.â When questioned about the legal cases brought against PSP importers, the SCEE Executive VP brushed away the matter stating that the matter was for the lawyers.
During the course of his speech, reported by industry site Gamasutra, Mr Harrison went to say that developers should begin to focus on more episodic content for games: "Our industry should move away from putting 20 hours of content onto a 5 gigabyte disc, and shift to a model which embraces more of an episodic delivery of content, just like television.â
The forthcoming next-gen console war was also discussed during the keynote address with Mr Harrison replying to a question posed on Xbox Liveâs success over PlayStation Network Play, by commenting that whilst the PlayStation3 will have a significant online presence it will remain an open environment with Sony ââ¦Distinct from our competitors, we are happy for publishers to make their own financial agreements directly with consumers.â
