One time partners with Epic, Digital Extremes, criticise Epic's latest version of the industry standard Unreal Engine...
The Entente Cordial between Digital Extremes (Unreal Tournament 2004, Warpath) and Epic has been shattered as the developer has criticised Epic's Unreal Engine 3. The comments have rubbed salt into the wounds of Epic's legal battle with Silicon Knights regarding the engine.
While Digital Extremes parted company with Epic a while ago following a long-term partnership, the Director of upcoming Digital Extremes title Dark Sector recently stated in an interview with Australian website Gameplayer:
"A lot of promises were made about the Unreal III engine, particularly on PS3. But as we see now, the time frames haven't been met and now a lot of games using it are being held up."
As a result, Digital Extremes took the decision to custom build Dark Sector, to avoid the problems faced by other developers who have run into trouble utilising the Unreal Engine 3.
One such developer is Silicon Knights, which filed a lawsuit last month against Epic regarding what they described as inadequacies in the engine that have harmed the company. This could be a reason for the continual delay and confusion regarding Silicon Knights' Too Human. Epic have made a counterclaim regarding these accusations.
The Unreal Engine 3 has been used in a number of successful titles to date, most notably with Gears of War on the Xbox 360.
