The end of a beautiful relationship as Eidos and SI go their seperate ways with regards to the 'Champ Man' series...
Eidos Interactive and Sports Interactive today announced that they have mutually decided to end their longstanding relationship with regards to the âChampionship Managerâ series.
Both companies are currently working on âChampionship Manager 03/04â, the first seasonal upgrade for CM4 and the last title in the series to be developed by Sports Interactive.
After its release during the fourth quarter, Eidos will retain the franchise name and develop further titles internally under the brand, with the first update planned for the 2004/2005 season. Sports Interactive will retain the rights to the player database and source code, and confirmed that it will announce its future plans during the first quarter of 2004.
Itâs certainly come as shocking news for CM fans, whilst weâre certainly surprised as the âChampionship Managerâ series has rightfully become one of Eidos strongest assets. The move leaves the question as to whether both products will remain successful without one another, whilst comments made from Miles Jacobson, Managing Director of Sports Interactive, certainly suggest a rift between the publisher and developer:
"If this were the music industry, we would be talking about a classic case of 'musical differences'," says Miles Jacobson, Managing Director of Sports Interactive. "We've enjoyed an excellent relationship with Eidos for many years now and will work closely with them to make sure that our final collaboration is the best version of CM ever. After that, I expect that we will become the friendliest of rivals."
"We would like to thank everyone involved with Sports Interactive for their hard work in helping establish Championship Manager as one of the industry's most successful franchises," says Jonathan Kemp, Eidos' European Managing Director. "Moving the development of Championship Manager to our newly-created internal studio will enable us to build upon the phenomenal success of the game and develop the brand further."
The announcement comes fresh after Eidos removed the âTomb Raiderâ franchise from Core Design and handed it to Crystal Dynamic, leaving the suggestion âWhat next?â - Hitman to Hothouse Creations presumably.
Weâll have more on the situation soon.
