E3 2002: Beach Spikers Hands-On News

We spend a little time with the beach ladies FROM this latest arcade port by Sega.
Whilst we wandered around the Nintendo booth wide-eyed we had a chance to play Beach Spikers from Sega. The beach volleyball game featuring very fit women wearing very little drew us in and then captivated us with some very cool gameplay.
The game of Volleyball itself is very similar to tennis, serving hitting over a net and what have you. However the real main difference about Volleyball is the fact that you can tee the ball up for your partner and allow them to spike it down into the sand. You use the āAā and āBā buttons to hit the ball and the direction stick to aim it towards your partner and then they either hit it back, or if youāve put it in the right place, thwack it down so hard that you opponents are left eating sand. Sadly there was only one pad connected to the GameCube we were playing on but the game automatically switched between players, this could have been frustrating but it works well very in practice.
Graphically things are pretty sweet, the character models are very detailed, and very good-looking to boot. The sand deforms as you would expect and looks good in the process, shadows following the contours you lay out. Lighting is top notch and is used liberally to create some stunning beach locations; the sunset in particular is very nice indeed. Animation too is very impressive the women throwing themselves at the ball and looking extremely realistic in the process due to seamless transitions between animations.
Although a rather simple game this is a great deal of fun in the style of Virtua Tennis and with four people this could be brilliant ā“ why on earth the demo machine didnāt have four pads I donāt know. The only gameplay option available to us was the arcade mode but there did appear to be a world tour option, but that wasnāt selectable. One can assume that it will have a rather large one-player mode of a similar nature to Virtua Tennis 2 featuring mini-games and things to purchases.
We came away impressed by this one and look forward to spending some more time with it.
