GSC Gameworld confirms a Q1 2008 release for the STALKER prequel - but where is THQ...
It may not have quite realised its potential in the end, but GSC Gameworld has today announced the development of a prequel instalment in the scavenging S.T.A.L.K.E.R. franchise.
Set twelve months before the events of Shadows of Chernobyl, S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Clear Sky charts The Factions War, a time when the various groups that inhabit the Zone end up fighting amongst themselves for land and artefacts. Playing the part of a Mercenary wandering the Zone, gamers will play a key part in the events that lead straight into the storyline of the original Shadow of Chernobyl.
Besides a new storyline, GSC promises additional technological enhancements, including Fast Travel, improved AI, and an update to the proprietary X-Ray engine...it all sounds pretty good, as long as the encyclopaedic lists of bugs that dogged the original title don't make an appearance too.
There was one key element missing from GSC's big announcement: the lack of a publisher, specifically THQ. Even scouring the developer's statement hasn't revealed any clues, so perhaps the publisher's patience finally ran out with GSC's extended and delayed production after all?
S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Clear Sky is due for release in the first quarter of 2008 on PC.
