Shonen Jump confirms an end to turn-based combat and random battles...
Marking the main series first appearance on a handheld, releasing the latest chapter in the celebrated Dragon Quest series exclusively on the Nintendo DS may have caused a few surprises, but given the format's success (particularly across Japan) it's one that appears to make commercial and creative sense.
Revealing the first details of Dragon Quest IX: Defenders of the Starry Sky within its latest issue, Shonen Jump suggests that the changes will continue with the removal of elements that have formed previous titles in the series.
Adopting an action based real-time combat system to support the emphasis on multiplayer, combat in Dragon Quest IX requires players to target their chosen opponent to reveal it to the others on the DS' bottom screen. Random battles will also be replaced with opponents that are immediately visible on the battlefield, whilst the game will offer another first for the series with the ability to customise your character.
