New York Times best-selling author scripts the storyline from Atari’s forthcoming techno-thriller RTS...
Atari today announced that New York Times best-selling author, Dale Brown, will script a storyline for its forthcoming near-future, geopolitical techno-thriller, Act of War: Direct Impact.
As revealed in screenshots featured alongside our recent interview with the team at Eugen Systems, the storyline will be set out across nearly an hourâs worth of original, live-action feature film footage courtesy of SWAT Films/Beyond FX.
Shot across a two-week period and featuring a cast of 10 principal actors and hundreds of extras, the footage will be blended in with scenes created by the in-game engine to depict the story of Jason Richter and Task Force Talon, as they discover a web of intrigue and terrorism that spans across the globe from Washington to Moscow and taking tea with the Queen at Buckingham Palace (ok so maybe not tea).
"SWAT Films theatrical interpretation of Dale Brown's intense story gives Act of War: Direct Action(TM) a dramatic sense of authenticity and creates a truly immersive entertainment experience," said Bob Welch, Executive Producer for Atari's Beverly studio. "By bringing together a novelist, filmmakers and game developers, Act of War: Direct Action(TM) is more than the sum of its parts."
"Producing nearly an hour of live-action film, as well as special effects for Atari's Act of War: Direct Action(TM) was an exciting creative challenge," said Daniel LeBlanc, Executive Producer, SWAT Films. "Our team had to produce film content to tell the game's story in the traditional between-levels format while also sharing with players what was going on behind the scenes with voiceover and shorter film clips streamed to players mid-game. The goal was to draw them in with the story and let the game blow them away and there's no doubt we've done just that."
Whilst live-action FMV sequences have virtually been drummed out of videogames since the invention and prompt extinction of âinteractive movieâ games akin to Night Trap and Sewer Shark and the subsequent failure of the Command & conquer series, weâre hoping that those featured within Act of War will heighten the atmosphere and not leave us with tears of laughter as is usually the case.
Act of War: Direct Impact is scheduled for a UK release on March 18th 2005, to see what the team had to say about the game, please check out our previous coverage.
