Rampant piracy on the PC blamed for the shift in strategy by the Crysis developers...
A critical hit on PC last year, it seems that Crysis developers, Crytek are less than amused by the performance of the game at retail, blaming widespread piracy for its 'suffering'.
In fact, the German studio is so disappointed by the problem of piracy on the platform that it's changing its policy, vowing not to produce another PC exclusive title again.
Speaking to Hungarian mag, PC Play, Crytek President Cevat Yerli spoke about the problem: "We are suffering currently from the huge piracy that is encompassing Crysis...I believe that's the core problem of PC Gaming, piracy."
The fact that the game was an exclusive on the PC also hindered what Crytek sees is Crysis' underwhelming performance, prompting the change in startegy: "Similar games on consoles sell factors of 4-5 more. It was a big lesson for us and I believe we won't have PC exclusives as we did with Crysis in future. We are going to support PC, but not exclusive anymore."
Despite the views of Crytek, the performance of Crysis certainly didn't disappoint the game's publisher, Electronic Arts. In their 2007/08 third quarter earnings report, EA's CEO John Riccitiello spoke of how Crysis had "exceeded expectations", with over one million sales during the three-month period.
