Console Chiefs Discuss The Next-Generation News
Jon Wilcox
01/06/2005

Messrs. Bach, Iwata, and Kutaragi argue the toss of their respective next-gen machines...
In a recent edition of Japanese publication Asahi Shinbun, the newspaper included comments made by all three console chiefs: Xboxâs Robbie Bach, PlayStationâs Ken Kutaragi, and Nintendoâs Satoru Iwata about their opinions on their respective next-generation consoles, as well as their thoughts on the competitors. As youâd expect, the resulting comments were somewhat partisan and biasedâ¦
Xboxâs Chief Officer, Robbie Bach explained how the Xbox 360 will be extremely competitive following the Christmas 2004 sales that saw Xbox exceeding those of the PlayStation2, leading Bach to adamantly state that the next-gen Microsoft machine will become the market leader in the next round of console wars. Kutaragi-san of course suggested that the state of Xbox 360 in the next round would be somewhat different to Bachâs comments, with the Father of PlayStation stating that whilst Microsoftâs follow-up to Xbox 360 may prove to be more competitive with Sony, the American behemoth, ââ¦is trailing behind us [Sony], but they are not a threat.â
Bach proclaimed that Sony had taken a huge risk by including the as yet non-standardised Blu-Ray format, though Kutaragi-san saw it as a natural progression following the integration of DVD into the PlayStation2. However, the main difference in the utilisation of a Blu-Ray drive in PS3 is that the next-gen DVD standard hasnât yet been reached, whereas the launch of the PS2 came six years after the current DVD format had been agreed upon. As Bach points out, the risk for PS3 is certainly there, especially since a next-gen DVD format war is yet to be averted. Kutaragi-san defends the decision and sees the addition of the drive in the PS3 will only serve to further drive the push Blu-Ray as the next-gen DVD standard.
During his round of questions, Bach also points out that in his opinion, Sonyâs decision to allow up to seven players to hook up to a single PS3 console and link up to two HDTVs would make it difficult to play coherently â“ just imagine the share of the TV screen per person. At the same time as debating the competition, Bach also revealed that he expects Microsoftâs game division to be out of the red by June 2007, around six months after the global release of the Xbox 360.
Somewhat more reserved than his two counterparts, Iwata-san recognised that the move by Sony and Microsoft to create HD compliant games will expand the development costs of games, not to mention that a lot of people donât actually have HDTVs. Iwata-san stated that the aim of the Revolution was to be unobtrusive in living rooms where videogames werenât and essential part of life. According to the Nintendo Chief, the strategy is to create a compact, thin, and inexpensive console that offers fun games for a wider audience.
The views of the three chiefs are certainly interesting, and in some respects not exactly surprising. With a staggered release schedule for each of the three consoles, itâll certainly be interesting to observe the uptake of next-gen consoles. Weâll have more on all of them shortly...
