Computer Hacking With A Cell Chip News

The PlayStation 3's Cell chip has been used to crack eight-character passwords at record speeds...
We've seen the impressive power of the PlayStation 3's Cell chip at work before, most notably with the Folding@Home project. This time a computer hacker (although, he's one of those 'good' computer hackers who's actually employed to do it) has used the Cell chip to crack passwords at previously unachievable rates.
BBC News reports that Nick Breese (who's employed by Security Assessment in Auckland), was able to use the Cell chip to crack eight-character passwords in a matter of hours. These types of passwords are typically used to protect PDF and Zip files, as well as secure applications such as Microsoft Word. Previous attempts of such cracks have supposedly taken a number of days to perform.
At a conference held earlier this month during New Zealand's Kiwicon, Breese said that powerful Intel chips could perform 10 to 15 million cycles per second on such tasks. However, because of the unique multiple core structure of the Cell chip, it could perform at a significantly faster rate of 1.4 billion cycles per second. This higher performance is possible because each core can be working on different password crack attempts at the same time.
So, the Cell chip can provide the computational power to help research brain functions, crack certain passwords at previously unheard of speeds, but it's barely been graced with a computer game that flexes its muscles. Here's hoping that Solid Snake doesn't become self-aware next year.
