The man who launched Playstation across Europe announces his resignation from Sony Corporation...

Sony Corporation today announced the resignation of Chris Deering, President of Sony Europe, in order to pursue personal opportunities in the US where his family currently resides.

Deering was appointed President of Sony Europe in April 2004 after a successful career in charge of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE), overriding the launch of the Playstation, Playstation2 and PSP across one hundred countries and helping the format to become the dominant format in the videogame industry.

Since moving on to Sony Europe, Deering has worked closely across all businesses to rationalise and reduce costs as part of Sonyâs global restructuring plans.

Fujio Nishida, who currently serves as EVP Corporate Executive in charge of Electronics Marketing at Sony Corporation in Tokyo, will succeed Deering in the role as both will work closely together in the coming weeks to facilitate a smooth transition. Before becoming EVP in charge of Electronics Marketing, Fujio Nishida worked with Sony Electronics Inc. in the US for seven years, three of which were served as President and COO.

"Chris Deering has made brilliant contributions to Sony Corporation throughout his career as President of Sony Europe, President and later Chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, and as a senior executive at Sony Pictures. The company will long benefit from all the initiatives he has put in place. He has earned our respect, our admiration and our gratitude, and we wish him continued success as he moves on in his career," said Sir Howard Stringer, Chairman and CEO, Sony Corporation. He continued, "Fujio Nishida will bring a wealth of global marketing experience and knowledge of the consumer electronics business to his new role. We know that he will build on the solid foundation already put in place by Chris, and continue to evolve and expand the profile of Sony Electronics across Europe."

"I leave Sony in Europe with many great memories and am convinced that Sony's future in Europe is unparalleled," commented Chris Deering. "The team is revitalised, the product line-up is now the best it has been in years, and momentum will build with the high definition digital wave under the new Sony management team. I am delighted to work with Fujio Nishida during the transition. Fujio has been a consistent supporter of Europe and will inject enhanced support from Tokyo in achieving Sony Europe's numerous growth initiatives."

"Building on my experience in the US, I look forward to my new role as the President of Sony Europe," said Fujio Nishida. "The European market is highly diverse with many challenges and opportunities. I wish to further expand our business in Europe and thus contribute to the Sony Group as a whole."
