Founding member of Sports Interactive team quits Championship Manager and game development to travel the world.
Oliver âOvâ Collyer, one of the two brothers who invented the best-selling Championship Manager football management game, has today announced that he is leaving Sports Interactive and will no longer be involved in writing computer games.
Oliverâs reasons for leaving the company, which he founded in September 1994 with his brother Paul, are explained in an âopen letterâ which he has written to the gameâs legions of fans and which is published today on the official Championship Manager website, www.sigames.com.
âI have devoted just about all of my adult life to making and improving [Championship Manager],â he says, âand I consider myself lucky to have been involved in what has been a hugely satisfying and unexpected adventure.
âFor me the halcyon days were probably when Paul and I were writing CM2 and the whole thing was a lot more personal. Although itâs been fun to work with such talented and enthusiastic people, being a smaller part of a bigger team just doesnât give me the same creative satisfaction. So, the time has come for me to move on and find new challenges in lifeâ¦
âRest assured that CM and Sports Interactive remain in good hands; we have assembled a wonderful team (largely comprising CM fans) who, under Paulâs guidance, are in the process of making CM4 better than any of the CM games to date, including the brilliant updates to CM3 (which I was not involved in). The future of CM couldn't be brighter.â
Commenting on his brotherâs departure, Paul Collyer says: âOf course I am sorry that Ov has chosen to leave, but I can completely understand his reasons for doing so. I would rather have a happy brother than a miserable business partner, so I am glad that Ov has come to a decision that will make him happy. And, while myself and the rest of the team will miss Ovâs input, nothing is going to stop CM4 from being the best football management game ever written.â
âOv will remain a major shareholder in Sports Interactive,â adds Miles Jacobson, SIâs Managing Director, âand the door will always be open, should he choose to come back to us at some stage in the future. I join with Paul and the rest of the team in wishing Ov every happiness.â
The latest season update for Championship Manager 3 will be published by Eidos Interactive in October 2001, while the next major update of the game, Championship Manager 4, is scheduled for release in October 2002.
