Castlevania DS Confirmed News

The classic Konami franchise heads to the DS ready to utilise some of the features of the new portable system...
Konami of Europe has today confirmed that the classic vampire-slaying franchise, Castlevania, is set for release on the recently launched Nintendo DS system sometime during Autumn 2005. Set a year after the events of Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow on the GameBoy Advance in 2036, the game follows Soma Cruz as he attempts to stop a cultâs efforts to resurrect Dracula.
The game will continue to be a 2D side-scroller (thankfully), although the developers have promised to fully utilise some of the features of the new system â“ and not just for maps! The use of the touch screen to unlock complex puzzles called âMagic Sealâ and the ability to transfer powers to other DSs are just two of the touches added to the gameâ¦although it is worth pointing out that one screen can double as a map too. By using the stylus, players must connect a series of symbols in the proper order to unlock an enchanted opening and disperse their enemyâs magic into it when they are weakened; whilst in true Castlevania tradition, collecting the souls of vanquished opponents allows you to gain new attacks and skills. DS players can exchange and/or trade this between each other, making use of the wireless capabilities of the handheld.
The title is the latest to come from the talented Koji Igarashi and his team, with the promise of a traditionally moving musical score, abilities grow as you progress through the game and visually stunning 2D visuals.
Announcing the title, Hans-Joachim Amann, Head of Product Management of Konami of Europe said that, "The game's rich storyline and strong characters coupled with the adoption of the new technology in the Nintendo DS has allowed us to bring the series to a whole new levelâ¦By utilising the Nintendo DS' sophisticated capabilities such as the Dual Screen functionality and Touch Screen technology, we are able to bring a fresh new dimension to this title and provide a truly unique gameplay experience for the gamer."
At the moment the game is just known as âCastlevania for Nintendo DS,â but we are sure that the developers will come up with something a bit catchier closer to release. Weâll have more on Castlevania soonâ¦
