Capcom reveals Abel and new gameplay details on the Focus Attack and Ultra Combo systems...
Having tickled the fancy of Street Fighter fans across the globe with the return of Chun-Li, Blanka, Zangief, E Honda, Dhalsim, and Guile alongside Ryu and Ken, Capcom today announced the second new character joining the roster.
Thankfully looking less like an SNK character than Crimson Viper, Abel's fighting style is described as a mix of various martial arts. That's about all we know at this stage, though he does seem slightly Gallic, perhaps the Zidane head butt is part of his repertoire?
TVG has also discovered a little more about the changes to the gameplay being introduced with Street Fighter IV.
The new Focus Attack system combines both defensive and offensive techniques in one hard hitting package. Upon entering the Focus Attack commands, your chosen character enters a special preparation pose offering defence from attacks. Sounding a little like the Alpha counters from the Alpha/Zero series, after focussing enough Ch'i the character will automatically let loose a devastating attack, allowing you to defend against oncoming attacks before unleashing a devastating counterattack. The setup is also used to counter certain moves along with the defensive pose, bringing a level of control to the SF connoisseur.
Taking Super Combos to the next level, Ultra Combos are where the next-generation Street Fighter gloss really begins to shine. Capcom is keeping schtum about the details, although we suspect the Ultra combo has something to do with the combo gauge at the bottom as opposed to the new Revenge bar at the top.
Due for release during Summer 2008, it appears that the arcade version at least will be based around Taito's X2 hardware marking the first Street Fighter title not to be based on proprietary Capcom hardware.
