Capcom Fights GTA3 Restrictions News

Japanese distributor fights the ruling of the Kanagawa Prefecture Governor...

In a statement released to its investors, Capcom has today voiced its discontent at a ruling made by the Governor of the Japanese Prefecture of Kanagawa(a province to the west of Tokyo that incorporates Yokohama and Mt Fuji) that prohibits the sale of Rockstarâs Grand Theft Auto III to customers aged less than 18 years of age under the Kanagawa Ordinance for the Protection of Youth.

The firm is the Japanese distributor of the game, and argues against the ruling due to the steps already taken by the company to clarify GTA3âs gameplay including:

Obtaining an age rating from the Computer Entertainment Rating Organisation (CERO) and displaying the rating (18 years and over) on the front of the product pack.
Additional advise displayed on the pack stating that the game âincludes violence and grotesque content.â
Requesting the retailers display the game on separate shelves to other titles.

Referring to these actions Capcom also comments that in makes the ruling, the Kanagawa Governor has, ââ¦paid no attention to such efforts of the parties concerned.â

Capcom finishes its statement advising that whilst it is continuing its efforts to improve the industryâs system of voluntary-restraint, it will ââ¦further examine how to cope with this issue including the possibility to take certain legal action.â
