CES'06: Xbox 360 HD Drive Set For 2006 Release News

Not an integrated drive as some suggested but an external High-Def drive...
Traditionally the place where Microsoft has made a fair share of unveilings, the Las Vegas held Consumer Electronic Show (CES) has again proved to be the platform for the company to reveal new plans for the company. During the pre-opening speech in which Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates spoke about the forthcoming Windows Vista, Xbox's Peter Moore confirmed something that had been doing the rounds in the media for sometime - that a High-Definition disc drive will be released for Xbox 360 during the course of 2006.
Rather than create a third Xbox 360 option to sit alongside the Core and Premium packs as some speculated however, Microsoft are to release the HD-DVD drive as an external peripheral that will enable gamers to watch HD-DVD movies through the next-gen console.
Moore stopped short of stating how much the drive would be, so too a more specific release date than '2006', but we'll bring you confirmation of those details as soon as they're released.
Elsewhere in his speech, Moore announced that Microsoft expects to ship up to 5.5 million Xbox 360 units by the end of June 2006 and that by that time up to 50 titles will be available for the next-gen console.
