CELL Production Begins Early News

Sony makes major investment to ramp up the production of the CELL processor…


Sony today announced that it will invest an extra 120 billion yen (£620 million) towards creating production plants for the mass production of the CELL processor.

Almost half of the investment will be spent on the current Sony Computer Entertainment production-line in Nagasaki, Japan, whilst a further 34 billion yen (£180 million) will be invested in an IBM manufacturing plant in New York.

As a result both Sony and IBM have confirmed that mass production of the CELL processor will begin earlier then intended, moving from the latter half of 2005 to the first half of 2005. Naturally this has sent out the signal that Sony are gearing up to release the Playstation3 as quickly as possible, having presumably been rushed into it by recent rumours that Xbox2 production is stepping up and the recent downswing in Playstation2 sales.

Itās believed that the manufacturing plants will have a total capacity of 15,000 CELL processors per month, so signs still suggest that Sony intend on releasing the Playstation3 in 2006; even if Sony run at a full year production from January 2005, they would only be able to launch with 200,000 units at most ā“ not even enough for a full-scale Japanese launch.

lol also for anyone with a brain you can buy a western digital 2.5 sata 320gb hdd for just under £50 twice the size for the same price as buying the 80gb with the 320gb hdd as the 160gb ps3 (lol yet again another sony rip off for the uk) whos c... [ Read full comment... ]

lol anyone up for £55 of content on the £355 160gb ps3 (and i thought the ps3 was supposed to be future proof with this news obviously not as this case has proved)though knowing sony the actual uk price will more than likely be higher pro... [ Read full comment... ]

Why do people say its ffVII sequel!!! If you read the initial story it says it has nothing to do with ffV11 and its not an RPG!! Chances are there is no big announcement and it was a big joke!!
