CELL Processor Makes Debut News

Sony, Toshiba and IBM today unveiled its future vision to an expecting audience…
Sony, Toshiba and IBM today lifted the wraps off the CELL processor at the International Solid State Conference, providing a slight glimpse of what the future holds for the Playstation3.
Measuring 221mm(2), featuring 234 million transistors and built upon 90-nanometre Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) technologies, representatives from the STI group claim that they have tested the processor at clock speeds in excess of 4GHz and suggest 10 times the performance of the latest PC processors.
As widely suspected, the 64-bit Power processor features, however itās the inclusion of eight 64-bit floating-point processors, dubbed Synergistic Processing Element (SPE), which provide the largest variation compared to traditional processors.
The eight individual cores allow the chip to run different programs independently and to divide up processing tasks more efficiently, with one particular example being its ability to run multiple operating systems in tandem. Whilst those with an interest in server technology or debating whether Red Hat is better then SUSE will be interested to learn of the processor specifics, details on what it means for the Playstation3 or perhaps Sonyās vision of the future remain hidden.
Its future in a wide range of applications from Servers to Supercomputers, Playstation3 to Portable Players, demonstrates the trioās intentions to shake-up the somewhat traditional Intel/AMD offerings.
Concerns have already risen as to whether the CELL processor will require software developers to āunlearnā what theyāve spent years learning, however the other side of the coin suggests that the move will inspire rival chip manufacturers to look to more radical designs and developments.
Judging from clock speed alone, itās fair to say that the CELL processor offers a huge leap from the technology of the current generation of home consoles, and whilst PC clock speeds are currently not far from the CELL processor, itās worth noting that the unique combination of the SPEās should ensure more efficient processing with fewer bottlenecks compared to traditional PC processor designs.
Sadly nothing substantially new was brought up during the announcement, however we expect further CELL information to become available at proceeding conference addresses.
