IBM announce that final design has finished on the chip that could power the PS3...


IBM engineers today confirmed that they have wrapped up the design work for the new āCELLā processor, a joint venture between themselves, Sony and Toshiba and believed to be the power behind the Playstation 3.

Touted as a āsupercomputer on a chipā, the design means that it will soon be handed over to engineers in order to craft a selection of samples. At this rate production of the chips could begin as early as winter 2004.

Specific details on the chip are being kept a tightly guarded secret, however the chip is said to deliver 1 trillion operations per second (1 teraflop), roughly 100 times the power of a Pentium 4 2.5GHz.

What differentiates the chip from existing microprocessors is the ability to perform multiple tasks at once, not only the heavy computational tasks for graphics, but it will also contain circuitry to handle high-bandwidth communications and run multiple devices.

What this means is a chip encompassing all of our entertainment needs, similar to what Sony was saying about the Playstation2!!!

this a good thing over 9 yrs it will happen folk wiil soon tire of wii's and the xbox(which is nearly all shooters, fun 4 a while, but ps3 does more in all ways

lol just how does sony expect the ps3 to sell more than the ps2 is a bit dumb considering the ps2 is still selling bucket loads across the world and with 120 more titles expected to hit the ps2 this year is it a real objective to shift over 140 milli... [ Read full comment... ]

not true. mine jumped 50 to 100 and i have had no problems since the update. i just hope that theres patches coming out for trophies soon...
