The Dixons group of retailers once again refuse to stock the school yard romp as anti-bullying charity airs disapproval...
As an inextricable sense of déjà vu begins to take hold in TVG Towers, it's been reported that the DSGi Group of retailers (which includes PC World and Dixons) are once again refusing to stock copies of Bully, which arrives on Xbox 360 and Wii at the beginning of March.
DSGi's stance, which has appeared on CVG, mirrors the company's response back in 2006 when the PlayStation 2 version of the game (renamed Canus Canem Edit) arrived in the UK. Back then, a statement from the retailer commented that the action was taken because of , "...the explicit link between violence and children that led us [DSG Retail] to the decision on this particular game." DSGi also removed copies of Rockstar's Manhunt back in 2004.
Backing up DSGi's move are comments from the UK-based BeatBullying charity. Speaking to The Telegraph, BeatBullying Communications Director Niall Cowley commented that, "We're disappointed this game was created in the first place. Some mindless people thought this was a fun, interesting piece of software to create, but it undermines all the hard work that organisations like ours are seeking to do."
He continued, "Our philosophy is about educating young people that bullying is not a cool thing to do, and this leaves us with a bad taste in the mouth."
Despite the furore by the mainstream press in the run up to its release, Canis Canem Edit was far from being a 'bully simulator', instead the Rockstar Vancouver title was a cross between Grange Hill and Tom Brown's Schooldays, with pranks aplenty. It's also worth remembering that attacking innocent kids and teachers in the game meant that players were punished.
