Cross between Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh!, as videogames and collector cards join forces...
Alongside the continuing Webisode series, Buena Vista Games today revealed further details on its forthcoming Nintendo DS title, Spectrobes.
Following the events of two junior Planetary Patrol officers named Rallen and Jeena, who must save the galaxy by collecting and training (sounds a little familiar) prehistoric creatures known as Spectrobes, who hold the key to defeating an enemy race named The Krawl. Once trained, Spectrobes are powerful creatures that Rallen can use to battle against other creatures, or compete against other players via local Wi-Fi play in one-on-one battles or organised tournaments for upto 16 players.
DS owners will also be able to connect to the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service to download content such as videos, creatures, custom parts and minerals (although where these are stored is a mystery for the time being). Accessing the Internet will also generate a personal planetary badge number, which can be linked to a player's profile on the Spectrobes website to display information about their creatures, armour, and weapons, along with accessing community features such as leaderboards.
Hoping to emulate the success of kids favourites such as Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh!, each copy of Spectrobes will include a pack of four code input cards to collect and trade. Once a special ability has been unlocked in the game, the card fits over the DS touchscreen and using the stylus to tap numeric holes in the card, unlocks new content such as creatures and minerals. Extra cards will be available at all good retailers!
