Physics and animation bolstered in future Blizzard titles with Havok 4.0 support...
The agonised last moments of death in Azeroth may about to become a little more realistic, with Havok today announcing that Blizzard Entertainment have become the latest to join the fold of developers using the Havok 4.0.
Released in July 2006, Havok 4.0 is a series of tools and technology that empowers Havok's physics and animation products, along with introducing two new products with Havok Behaviour and Havok FX.
Intriguingly the original press release makes a heavy mention of the suite's optimisation for the PlayStation3, along with Microsoft's 64bit OS and the Apple Mac, though Havok does provide cross-compatibility across all formats with its products - it may be a little premature to suggest Blizzard are working on a PS3 title!
âHavok 4.0 will add power and flexibility to our development process," said Mike Morhaime, president and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment. âWe're looking forward to utilizing this technology with our upcoming games."
Jeff Yates, Havok's Vice President, Product Management comments, âThe Mac is an important piece of technology and because of the cross-platform nature of Havok's technology, the port to Mac was easy to do. Furthermore, Blizzard Entertainment's commitment to OS X and to the Mac community is a good indication of the growth potential of the Mac as a games platform. Blizzard has always put out great games on the Mac, and we look forward to Havok becoming a part of that tradition."
So the natural question is what will be the first game from Blizzard to utilise the technology, the heavily rumoured Diablo 3, Starcraft 2, Starcraft: Ghost perhaps... well maybe not!
