Take-Two confirms success for the 2K Games' FPS with a sequel due in 2009...
Take-Two Interactive has today confirmed that 2K Boston and 2K Australia's Xbox 360/PC shooter BioShock has sold over 1.5 million units since it launched towards the end of August. News of the game's success comes as the company announced that the demo of BioShock on Xbox Live Marketplace has been downloaded over one million times. A sequel to the title was confirmed in a Conference Call with the Take-Two board, with an expected release in two years time.
BioShock's sales performance comes as Take-Two Interactive confirmed its financial results for the third quarter of fiscal 2007, which ended on July 31st. Despite a drop in net revenues of just under $35 million from $241.2 million to $206.4 million, the company reduced its net losses from $91.4 million to $58.5 million, which Take-Two states is as a result of decreases in product costs, software development costs, and operating costs.
Strauss Zelnick, Chairman of Take-Two, stated, "Today we are establishing guidance for fiscal 2008 - the first full year to reflect the contributions of our new management team. Our outlook reflects a strong product pipeline, the benefits of a comprehensive restructuring and cost-efficiency program, including the sale of our non-core Joytech accessories division, and the expected profitability of our sports business. We also are announcing a new publishing label - 2K Play - focused on the expanding casual gamer market. We are proud of what this Company's management team has accomplished in a short time, and confident that our efforts will build the value of Take-Two in the future."
Ben Feder, Chief Executive Officer of Take-Two, added, "Take-Two is well-positioned to capitalize on the growth of the video game market as next generation consoles gain traction. Our creative teams are delivering a strong and increasingly diverse product portfolio, including our successful new BioShock franchise. We are looking forward to our 2007 holiday line up, as well as our solid 2008 slate, which includes the release of Grand Theft Auto IV in our fiscal 2008 second quarter."
Take-Two also confirmed the line up of titles for the rest of the fiscal year, which included the likes of Table Tennis on Wii, a Game of the Year Edition for Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and a North American release of a more sanitised version of Manhunt 2. An outline of titles heading for release in the following fiscal year, which begins on November 1st, includes Bully on Xbox 360 and Wii, GTA IV, and Top Spin 3 - but there's no room for LA Noire or Beaterator.
