The classic shooter is confirmed for an update to PSP later in 2006...
Atari has today announced the development of Battlezone on PSP, which will be released in November 2006. The game, an update from the twenty-six year old arcade title, sees players battle it out in hover-tanks across ten environments from Chinese jungles, US canyons, and Antarctic tundra, in six multiplayer gamemodes (such as Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Hotzone, and Fox & Hound) that up to four players can engage in via Wi-Fi.
The focus for the game seems to be very much with multiplayer, as Atari confirms that the single-player campaign will act as a learning curve for players ahead of the main Wi-Fi action, with a host of unlockable items and weapons on offer. Post-release support for the game will also continue with players able to customise two of the game environments online and transfer them to their PSPs.
"The BattleZone arcade game broke the mold for vehicle action combat in 1980, and today's version will reinvent this classic property into a modern day must-have," said Stephen Baer, Senior Product Manager, Atari, Inc. "BattleZone for the PSP system offers the fast-paced action and addictive gameplay that meets the demands of today's on-the-go generation."
Currently in production at Paradigm Entertainment, news of the title first broke when Atari chief, Bruno Bonnell confirmed in February that the company would be selling its internal studios, including Paradigm.
