Atari: Breaking Even Is The Priority News

As he puts his cards on the table, the Atari/Infogrames boss also reveals expectations of a double/triple-platinum hit in Alone in the Dark...
Having faced a somewhat tempestuous few years, in which it's been forced to sell off several brands and internal studios, Atari and its parent company Infogrames seem to laying down the foundation for a more stable future.
In recent months, the publisher has appointed David Gardner (the man who practically built EA's European presence with his bare hands) as CEO, and former SCE Worldwide Studios head, Phil Harrison as President. Both men seem adamant that Atari can turn a corner, and in an interview with global news organisation Reuters, Gardner set out his main goal:
"We want to stop losing money...This management's team number one goal is to get a business plan together that gets us to a break-even level."
Key to the plan to break even is the sales performance of Alone in the Dark, currently being polished ahead of its launch in June. In development at the publisher's lone internal studio, Eden Games, Alone in the Dark is something of a reboot for a franchise largely regarded for kick-starting the survival-horror genre, and follows Edward Carnaby in the sinister setting of NYC's Central Park.
In the same interview, Gardner revealed the company's high expectations for the title:
"Over the life of the product in this business year across platforms we are expecting between 2 and 3 million units."
So no pressure, Mr Carnaby...
