Analysts Debate Initial PSP Success News

Conflicting reports from two sources discuss the initial impact of the PSP following the US launch...
Itâs now T plus 7 days in the lifespan of the PSP over in North America, and the analysts are already debating whether Sonyâs new handheld system has been a success or not. American Technology Researchâs P.J. McNealy is airing on the side of caution at this early stage citing an AmTech survey that discovered that only one third of the 150 stores had actually sold out of stock, with specialist stores suffering from shortages. More general stores such as US supermarket behemoth Wal-Mart still have PSP units, which has led McNealy to conclude that the system has had a ââ¦solid, but not spectacularâ start.
McNealy reports that, "We believe that the PSP has come close to shipping its target 1 million units in North America, with a range of 475,000 to 575,000 sold to date in the U.S. with roughly another 250,000 to 300,000 in the channel."
On the flipside of the coin, UBS analyst Mike Wallace has taken the view that aside from the potential drop in supplies of the system in the US after its as yet undecided release in Europe, â"Given the tight supply now, the probable redirection of units toward Europe for its expected June launch, and the problems Sony had last year with PS2 production, we will not assume that Sony can produce as many units as people expect."
The fact that Wallace is pointing to a June release for the system in Europe is intriguing as it goes against the grain of recent rumours that the PSP wonât launch until September 2005. One thing that both McNealy and Wallace agree on though is the long term prospects of the system with Wallace prophesising that âWe think the PSP will be the dominant handheld gaming device in two years."
