It's been just under ten years since a cloned Ellen Ripley fought against the acid-for-blood xenomorphs in Alien: Resurrection, but the iconic creatures are set to feature in a new set of next-gen videogames from 2009 courtesy of SEGA.
A deal between the publisher and Alien IP owners 20th Century Fox will see a number of titles, including a First-Person Shooter and a Role-Playing Game, released. According to further reports originating from The Hollywood Reporter, the games won't follow the storyline of the four movies, but will remain immersed in the Alien universe.
"As a direct result of Fox's efforts over the past 27 years, Alien has become one of the most recognised franchises in the motion picture industry," said Simon Jeffery, President and Chief Operating Officer, SEGA of America, Inc. "SEGA will utilise the power of next-gen systems to blend the time-honoured story with leading edge design technology to deliver a riveting and suspenseful gameplay experience."
"Alien is one of those special franchises that has continued to thrive in licensing long after it has left theaters. The L & M program [Licensing & Merchandising] has been very successful over the years because we have partnered with the best companies in each category and created appealing products that become must-haves for the extremely loyal Alien fans." added Elie Dekel, Executive Vice President, Fox Licensing & Merchandising. "We look forward to partnering with SEGA, a known leader in the gaming industry, to expand the program to the next generation gaming systems and bring the franchise to life with the newest technology and gameplay."
The upcoming titles won't be the first time that SEGA has dabbled with the Alien brand; back in 1993 the publisher launched Alien3: The Gun for arcades, which included a couple of meaty moulded assault rifles on the cabinet.
We'll have more news shortly...
