The publisher demands "Compensation" from MTV Games for compatibility with their GH III controller...
Publisher Activision has stated that in order for their Guitar Hero III controllers to be used in the PS3 version of Rock Band, MTV Games and Harmonix will have to pay for the right to use the GH III peripheral in their multi-instrument rhythm game.
Speaking to the Boston Globe, a Spokesperson for Activision commented: "We believe we should be compensated for the use of our technology."
This follows last week's debacle where MTV Games/Harmonix accused Activision of blocking a PS3 patch allowing the GH III controller to be used in Rock Band (this is already possible on the Xbox 360).
Activision then responded by saying that MTV Games/Harmonix's reaction "paints a very misleading picture." However, this latest report suggests that the missing piece of the puzzle was the almighty dollar.
On top of their clarification that payment from MTV Games and Harmonix was the mitigating circumstance in their blocking of the PS3 patch, Activision were also quick to assert that "We are really and truly not looking at this from the financial standpoint." And continued by saying, "We are looking at this from the consumer standpoint."
Currently, the only way to experience the full four-piece Rock Band gameplay (guitar, bass, drums and vocals) is to use an additional Guitar Hero controller. This is because the standalone Guitar peripheral for Rock Band is not yet available on the US market and the Rock Band bundle comes with one guitar.
With talks breaking down between Activision and MTV Games/Harmonix over PS3 compatibility, it appears that PS3 rockouts on Rock Band will be minus a bassist.
