Activision Wants Cash For Compatibility News

The publisher demands "Compensation" from MTV Games for compatibility with their GH III controller...

Publisher Activision has stated that in order for their Guitar Hero III controllers to be used in the PS3 version of Rock Band, MTV Games and Harmonix will have to pay for the right to use the GH III peripheral in their multi-instrument rhythm game.

Speaking to the Boston Globe, a Spokesperson for Activision commented: "We believe we should be compensated for the use of our technology."

This follows last week's debacle where MTV Games/Harmonix accused Activision of blocking a PS3 patch allowing the GH III controller to be used in Rock Band (this is already possible on the Xbox 360).

Activision then responded by saying that MTV Games/Harmonix's reaction "paints a very misleading picture." However, this latest report suggests that the missing piece of the puzzle was the almighty dollar.

On top of their clarification that payment from MTV Games and Harmonix was the mitigating circumstance in their blocking of the PS3 patch, Activision were also quick to assert that "We are really and truly not looking at this from the financial standpoint." And continued by saying, "We are looking at this from the consumer standpoint."

Currently, the only way to experience the full four-piece Rock Band gameplay (guitar, bass, drums and vocals) is to use an additional Guitar Hero controller. This is because the standalone Guitar peripheral for Rock Band is not yet available on the US market and the Rock Band bundle comes with one guitar.

With talks breaking down between Activision and MTV Games/Harmonix over PS3 compatibility, it appears that PS3 rockouts on Rock Band will be minus a bassist.

I can see alot of ebay shops setting up just importing Rockband to the EU, they will make loads, people get it cheaper and quicker. At the full price EA wants for it the game is a dead duck in the EU.

Activision is being really stupid about all of this. I am betting they are thinking that this kind of game is just a fad or something and is hoping to control the market as much as they can. All I can say about that is look at the whole IBM vs Mac ... [ Read full comment... ]

If this is true, it's only going to hurt Activision for being greedy. If they really thought about it they could have been making a lot of money these last three months while EA sat on their "Deluxe Edition" laurels with a standalone GH3 c... [ Read full comment... ]

This is an incredibly stupid move by Activision. They ARE getting compensated. People will buy one of their controllers to use with RockBand. This is alimited window of opportunity since Rockband standalone instruments are right around the corner (wi... [ Read full comment... ]

Hey first poster, read the article again. It's not sony that is blocking it, it's Activision. There was probably nothing they could do about the xbox version, but since they found they could get money out of it with the ps3 version they're going for ... [ Read full comment... ]
