Expanded online modes, master tracks from major publishers and independent labels, new peripherals...
With the build up to this year's Battle of the Bands already underway, Activision today lifted the lid on Guitar Hero 3, currently in development at Neversoft for the PlayStation2, Xbox 360, PlayStation3 and Wii.
The first title in the series developed without the input of the series creators Harmonix, Guitar Hero 3 promises a host of new features including a new multiplayer action-inspired battle mode, boss battles, unlockable content and a selection of authentic rock venues to play.
Promising more master tracks then ever before, Activision have been hard at work securing strategic partnerships with major publishers and independent record labels to provide "unrivalled" access to their catalogues. For the first time in Guitar Hero history, wannabe rockers will be able to play the original songs from a provisional track-list that includes:
- Paint It Black (by The Rolling Stones)
- Cherub Rock (by Smashing Pumpkins)
- Sabotage (by Beastie Boys)
- The Metal (by Tenacious D)
- My Name is Jonas (by Weezer)
- Knights of Cydonia (by Muse)
- Rock And Roll All Nite (as made famous by Kiss)
- School's Out (as made famous by Alice Cooper)
- Slow Ride (as made famous by Fog Hat)
- Cult of Personality (by Living Colour)
- Barracuda (as made famous by Heart)
After the disappointment of Guitar Hero 2 on Xbox Live, Activision promise significantly expanded online multiplayer modes, allowing players to grind the axes to compete head-to-head for true worldwide supremacy. Likewise, recognising the outpour of discontent that followed the wired X-Plorer controller, Activision will release wireless peripherals for each format. The Gibson branded guitar will feature removable faceplates to provide a level of customisation beyond a handful of stickers, along with a new button colour scheme to provide a more authentic feel that's less like a kiddie's toy. The Xbox 360, PlayStation3 and Wii versions will be based around the classic Gibson Les Paul model, whilst PlayStation2 fans will be treated with an all-new Gibson Kramer model.
"The development team at Neversoft has been exceptional, and we've been able to incorporate a host of fresh new online and multi-player game play modes, along with exciting content into this version of Guitar Hero that our fans have been asking for. Also, many of the top bands and songs we've tried to get in the past are now on board, and we've definitely got some giant aces in the hole to say the least," said Dusty Welch, head of publishing at RedOctane. "In addition, offering a new line of Gibson wireless guitars for each platform is going to truly add to the authentic rock star experience like no other."
