New life is breathed into the new Acclaim Games with the announcement of the first title from the company...
Following the bankruptcy of the original Acclaim in Autumn 2004, and the subsequent purchase of both the Acclaim name and logo by former Activision executive Howard Marks at the end of 2005, the new Acclaim Games has been officially re-opened for business.
Set to focus on localised versions of online titles from the Far East, Acclaim's first title will be BOTS, a free downloadable game where players will be able to customise their very own robot by spending both real world and virtual world money. Besides a real world monetary model used in game, Acclaim will also use in-game advertising to attract income, allowing them to focus on providing free online titles.
Making the announcement Acclaim CEO Howard Marks said, "Acclaim Games is passionate about gaming and committed to delivering the best online games available to the world. These games were created to captivate gamers and provide the exciting multiplayer experience that youth users demand."
With an influx of online titles both released and soon to be released, Acclaim will certainly have its work cut out in an attempt to stand out from the crowd. That said, the fact that the games are being offered for free is sure to be an incentive for those dissuaded from paying a monthly subscription - the most notable non-subscription MMO title to date is possibly ArenaNet's Guild Wars, which has established over a million gamers since it was launched ten months ago.
BOTS will be available from the official website this spring, with Acclaim's second title, the martial arts MMORPG 9Dragons, set to follow afterwards.
