Online interview with ATi `evangelist` reveals the company`s own thoughts on the future console war...
In an interview with online tech site bit-tech.net ATiâs Richard Huddy has revealed some of thoughts and opinions going around the Xbox GPU developerâs offices. Delving into the impending Xbox 360 vs. PlayStation 3 battle, Huddy defended ATiâs decision to create a GPU with a unified pipeline for the Xbox 360â“ something that has been derided by his Nvidia counterparts:
âWith a unified pipeline we can now devote 100% of the hardware to which ever task is the bottleneckâ¦Rather than separate pixel and vertex pipelines, weâve created a single unified pipeline that can do both. Providing developers throw instructions at our architecture in the right way, Xenos [Xbox 360âs GPU] can run at 100% efficiency all the timeâ¦For comparison, most high-end PC chips run at 50-60% typical efficiencyâ¦The hardware manages itself.â
Making a slight dig at his companyâs competitors, he added, âBut RSX isnât unified, and this is why I think PS3 will almost certainly be slower and less powerful.â
Commenting on the issue of backwards compatibility between the Xbox 360 and the Xbox, Mr Huddy explained that Microsoft didnât focus on such a feature in the beginning because, ââ¦they didnât want to compromise this generationâs hardware for the sake of last generationâs games.â However the problem is one that appears to been ironed out with Xbox 360 allowing backwards compatibility through the use of emulation profiles for each title that according to Huddy supposing that Microsoft will make more profiles available through Xbox Live.
How Nvidia will react to Mr Huddyâs comments will be quite interesting, especially with his suggestions that Nvidia will eventually retract their argument and begin work on a unified pipeline â“ weâll have more on that shortly...
