60GB PS3 To Be Discontinued [UPDATE] News

The existing 60GB is destined to go the way of the dodo as the 40GB model takes centre stage...
Following Sony's announcement last Friday that they are introducing a new 40GB PlayStation 3 in Europe and slashing the prices of the current 60GB model, reports from Kotaku suggest that the 60GB will be discontinued once all the current stocks are depleted.
Nick Sharples, SCEE's Director of Corporate Communications, said: "The 60GB Starter pack will remain on sale until stocks run out (a number of months, depending on territory.) Thereafter, the 40GB model will be the only SKU in the SCEE region."
This would leave the 40GB model (which has no PS2 backwards compatibility, two USB ports - rather than four - and no multi memory card port) as the sole PS3 model on the European market. This suggests a partial retreat for Sony's all conquering home entertainment unit, although the Ãâ£299 price tag for the 40GB model does make the system much more appealing.
[Update] Sharples has subsequently explained that there are no plans for to add backwards compability functionality to the 40GB PlayStation 3. Speaking to Joystiq, the SCEE Director of Corporate Communications stated:
"We have no plans to do so at the moment. The sheer numbers of PS2 titles available, together with the increased complexity of using a software only solution for each and every title means that to ensure accurate software emulation for the majority would be technically challenging, time consuming and costly," he said.
"As we have mentioned on several occasions, our engineering resources are now focused on developing new and innovative features and services for the PS3 and, as a result the 40GB model does not have backwards compatibility with PS2 titles."
