360 Goes 32nm in 2009? News

IBM confirms that its well on the way to delivering 32nm chips to its partners in late 2009...
IBM, in conjunction with its development partners (AMD, Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Ltd., Freescale, Infineon, and Samsung) today announced that it has achieved a new approach to assist in the production of 32nm processors.
The approach, which could theoretically find itself employed in cheaper and quieter Xbox 360's towards the end of 2009, marks an industry first by using high-k/metal gate (HKMG) process technology in 32nm processors.
Although it doesn't take too much of a stretch to imagine cheaper Xbox 360's two years from now, the news at least suggests that Microsoft and its manufacturing partner, Chartered, are well on course to continue chopping away at the manufacturing costs and will be virtually giving them away for Christmas 2009. Of course we will all be talking about the 360's successor by then, but we suspect Microsoft will want to continue supporting the 360 for longer than it did with its predecessor.
